Sunday 3rd March – Tour of Roker Pier and Lighthouse
A private weekend visit to the Pier and Tour of the Lighthouse on the Sunderland Coast.
10.00am – Start Time
Built between 1885 and 1903 when Sunderland major British Port, Roker Pier ad Lighthouse represented a ‘triumph of engineering’ by Henry Hay Wake, with the logistics of building the striking landmark resulting in solutions ahead of their time.
In 2012, extensive restoration of the pier, tunnel and lighthouse began funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council. The tunnel and lighthouse are now open to the public for the first time in the structure’s history!
There will be two group tours the first starting at 10am and the second 10.45am, those on the second tour will have the chance to explore the pier and the seafront while the first group complete the tour and then switch over. SCR members are welcome to finish the morning with a pub lunch on the seafront, details of venue to be confirmed.
