Professor Grimley specialises in twentieth-century British history, focusing on religion and writing extensively on the subject. Please see below for a brief outline of Professor Grimley’s lecture;

From early in the Second World War, left-leaning Anglican clergy and laypeople began to plan how to reconstruct Britain to make it fairer and more democratic. They sought to create democratic communities in parishes, workplaces and military bases, pioneering discussion groups, liturgical innovation and ecumenical collaboration. Their efforts were championed and publicised by the Christian socialist politician, Sir Stafford Cripps. This lecture will explore the wartime ideas of Cripps and his circle, and their influence on the Labour government elected in 1945.
