7 March 2019: “Being a Political Woman: Change, Challenge and Choice” with Maura McKeon

SCR Lecture Series jointly hosted with the JCR Feminism Society – ‘Being a Political Woman: Change, Challenge and Choice’.

This lecture was celebration of International Women’s Day given by Labour county councillor, campaign organiser and Jo Cox Leadership and recent graduate Maura McKeon. Maura outlined her motivations, selection and role as a County Councillor. She discussed the importance of political women and the obstacles they face in the pursuit of a better society at both local and national level. A key thesis was that over the past century, political women have improved our lives by challenging and changing the status quo, and giving choice and opportunity to other women in politics and beyond. The challenge now is not only to celebrate these achievements but to carry these forward with an agenda of radical change.
