Black Holes and Quasars
Mr Daniel Kynoch
Centre of Extragalactic Astronomy
Shadowy colossi reside in the centres of galaxies …supermassive black holes that weigh as much as ten billion Suns. Once, black holes were considered myths or mere mathematical curiosities but observational evidence for their existence has been mounting over the last several decades. Recent landmark breakthroughs include the detection in 2016 of gravitational waves produced by merging black holes and the first ever image of an event horizon released earlier this year. We can learn a great deal about the phenomenon by studying quasars: the luminous hearts of galaxies with an actively growing black hole. I highlight some recent advances in the field and discuss my own research into the physical processes at work in the extreme gravity around the singularity.
Recognising Human Walking Pattern Using Machine Learning Approaches
Dr Ning Jia
Department of Computer Science
The proliferation of the national-wide deployment of surveillance cameras and identity management systems has promoted the development of biometric systems. Gait as a behavioural biometric trait can be measured unobtrusively at a moderate distance, thus it is predominant in remote human tracking and identification tasks. The past two decades have witnessed a considerable development of gait recognition systems. Yet there are challenges that confine the practical application of gait analysis. The motivation of our work is to identify the problems and find corresponding solutions to explore the potentials of gait recognition and promote its applicability in open-world scenarios.
