The MCR Committee are hosting their first research seminar of the term with speakers from the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Psychology, followed by a drinks reception.

    Topic – ‘Making Hard Decisions: A Mathematical Approach to Security Threats’

Underwater Archaeologist & Honorary Research Associate, Department of Archaeology, Durham University

Gary will be talking about his conservation work, finds from the River Wear and his involvement in the Durham River Wear Assemblage Project with Durham University.

Saturday 22nd February – Opera by the Lake with Sir Thomas Allen

Van Mildert College are delighted to confirm that Opera by the Lake 2020 will be taking place in College on Saturday 22nd February. It promises to be a wonderful occasion and follows the similar and hugely successful performance which took place as part of College’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2015 during the alumni reunion weekend.

Once again, Sir Thomas Allen, Durham University’s Chancellor and renowned international baritone, will be joining us along with a number of Durham alumni soloists; Sarah Baillie, Eleanor Penfold, Bridget Tomlinson and, our College Arts Fellow, Matthew Morgan. The programme will include works by Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet, Rogers and Hammerstein and much more.

Entry by donation to Van Mildert College Trust, recommended donation £20.

SCR Involvement Opportunity

There is also an opportunity for SCR members to sing in the opera chorus. Rehearsals will take place throughout the term as detailed below, While we hope that you will join us for as many of the rehearsals as you can, if you do not live locally the essential ‘must attend’ rehearsals are those on the evening of Friday 21st February and afternoon of Saturday 22nd February before the evening performance. Music will be provided and expression of interest to sing should be sent to [email protected] as soon as possible.
