SCR Bulletin – 2 February 2022

Highlight of the week – first SCR walk of the year

We’re pleased to be able to let you know that the first of several SCR walks this year is now open for booking.  This will take place on Sunday 20 February and will be another attempt at November’s walk around the Croxdale estate, which was aborted due to Storm Arwen.  Kate, who will be leading this walk, will be in touch soon with more details, however if you are interested in attending, please email [email protected] by Sunday 13 February with the names and contact phone numbers of those attending.

Action time!

This section highlights activities where action would be useful, for instance events with open sign-ups and registrations.

The second SCR Buffet Lunch of term will take place on Wednesday 9 February. Sign-up for this event is still open, and closes at midday this Friday, 4 February, using the online form emailed to you.

Sign up for the Chinese New Year Formal is now open and closes at 9am tomorrow.  The sign-up form has been circulated to members via email.

You can also still sign up to Prof. Mole’s Dimensions Lecture on Frankenstein taking place next Tuesday.  To attend, please complete the form at https://forms.office.com/r/H58K1dus99.

Exploration

A chance to find out a little bit more about something related to someone – or something – to do with the SCR.

February’s meeting of the SCR Book Group next week gives us a chance to put the spotlight on one of the SCR’s most active yet lesser-known activities.

“Monday 7th February’s College book group meeting will be as usual on Zoom, and centres on The Secret River by Kate Grenville,” explains group leader Kathryn Armstrong. “This was chosen by group member Vicky, in part to compare with last October’s title, Hope Adam’s Dangerous Women,  and has inspired another group member to research an ancestor transported to Australia for stealing a sheep! The Secret River is based on the author’s own ancestors’ experience of transportation and settlement in Southeastern Australia and, according to online reviews divides opinion. Will Van Mildert book group love it, or hate it for its often harrowing descriptions of convict life and attitudes towards the indigenous people?”

The book group is very active with regular monthly meetings, and is always open to new members, and you can find out more or join the group by emailing [email protected] to get the link.
