SCR Bulletin – 11 January 2023

Happy New Year everyone!

You are warmly invited to sign up for our first event of the year. It is a general-level talk in the Ustinov Room at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday January 26th 2023, followed by a 3-course dinner in the Lakeside Room at 7.30 p.m.

Title: The James Webb Space Telescope
Speaker: Professor Martin Ward

One year, one month and one day after the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, we are delighted and privileged to have Martin Ward as our Guest Speaker.

Professor Ward is the emeritus Temple Chevalier Professor of Astronomy here at Durham and part of the Science Team of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope. He is uniquely placed to tell us about the construction, launch, deployment and first exciting scientific results from the largest optical telescope in space. The MIRI instrument is now enabling astronomers to see back in time, with amazing clarity, to within less than 290 million years after the Big Bang. In a richly illustrated talk, Professor Ward will take us back in time on a non-technical journey to parts of the universe never before seen.

The dinner menu will be

  1. Celeriac, Potato and Rosemary Soup
  2. Pan-Fried Salmon       Vegetarian Option: Pumpkin Ravioli
  3. Passion Fruit & Mango Cheesecake
  4. Coffee and Mints

Dress code for dinner is lounge suit or equivalent.
