Report: trip to Roker Pier

On Sunday 3 March, SCR members and their guests enjoyed a tour of Roker Pier and Lighthouse. Roker Pier was constructed between 1885 and 1903 and has recently undergone an extensive programme of restoration funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council.

The visit began with a presentation from the volunteer tour guides, outlining the construction of the pier and lighthouse, illustrated by various archive images of the development.

Following the talk, the group descended into the pier and explored the tunnel – which runs within the structure – to the base of the impressive lighthouse. From the base of the lighthouse, the SCR were able to climb to the top of the building, learning about the restoration work which has recently been completed. From the top, we were treated to magnificent views out across the North Sea.

After a return walk along the pier top, members and their guests enjoyed a Sunday roast lunch at a nearby restaurant.
